Gafasandals Footwear at 5: A Cultural Shift

Posted by : Tayo Afelumo / Posted on : November 28, 2020

During summer, Gafasandals marked 5-years of designing affordable, ethnic and unique footwear. The brand celebrated this milestone with a launch of its Spring and Summer collection, named ‘Inyi.’  In igbo mythology, ‘Inyi’ means a strong tree or a tree that does not die. It is symbolic of the longevity of our products and the willful and determined spirit of those who wear them.

The collection is designed by our creative director Grace Alex, and pays homage to igbo folklore. It aims to connect young adults in simpatico with their Nigerian cultural heritage.

The reason being, few contemporary footwear brands located in Nigeria mirror our cultural heritage and make it adaptable to our everyday lifestyle. The few that exist, have price points that are unaffordable for young adults and millennials.

To allow for a hybrid cultural experience, Gafasandals collaborated with an Abuja based designer and artist Apocalyptoart, to design the collection. The designs feature graphic elements inspired by igbo folklore and are accessible to young adults looking to connect with their roots.

Our unique products are made with locally sourced materials that are durable and comfortable. Since 2015, the brand has sold over 3,000 pairs and counting- reaching a wide client base regardless of sex and age.

Recent Events

The recent economic taciturn caused by COVID-19, also allowed the brand to restructure. Customers are able to purchase our products directly from our site. Payment is facilitated by Nigeria’s Fintech companies Paystack and Flutterwave. Efforts by our team and customers have ensured that we continue to deliver our services nationwide. Indeed, 5-years of delivering quality footwear designed for comfort isn’t an easy feat and below are few tips for startups.

Business Tips For Rookies

Running a successful brand in Nigeria can prove to be a challenge and startups are likely to fail by their fifth year. According to Forbes, 9 out of 10 startups fail and having the best product is not the best marker for success. However, it is important to know when to pull back and re-strategize. But below are some applicable lessons that has worked for us:
  • One sometimes needs time to step back and to acknowledge one’s own failures.
  • Hire the right people, invested in the success of your company.
  • Do not ignore problems, they come back to bite.
  • Let go of weak links.

  • As a leader, understand how the system operates and be reliable.
  • Understand market trends and act in favor of your company.
  • Keep track of spending and cut cost as much as possible.
